At first glance, this picture makes you question why the photographer has chosen to capture it. The whole area looks almost deserted but apart from that, it seems like there is an ordinary road, lawn and in the distance a few trees, cars and a house. You may also notice in the centre of the photograph there is a triangular road sign directly below a set of clouds. The clouds above the sign can be compared to a cone of ice cream, or a tub of candy floss. The picture is in black and white which, in my opinion, makes it look mysterious and makes me want to ask more questions. However, if you give this photo a closer look, you will notice the smaller details. For example, there is a repeated pattern of triangles (the road sign and it's shadow, the trees in the background, the house). As well as this, there is a repeated pattern of windows, in the cars and the house. Has the artist done this on purpose, or have they not actually realized these things until after taking it? In the front centre of the picture, there is the sign I spoke about earlier, this is the main focus of the picture and what viewers may be immediately drawn to. In the middle ground of the picture there is a rundown looking lawn with a pavement and road beside it. Finally, in the background of the picture, you can see a few trees, a house and a couple of cars. The road in the background appears to keep going on until it is too far away, and blurry to see anymore. The subject of the picture is directly in the centre to eye catch. Everything in the foreground, middle ground and almost everything in the background is completely in focus. However, if you look closely into the far right background you can see it is inevitably slightly out of focus because it is so far away. The part of the photo which is the most captivating to me is probably the way it looks like the clouds are sitting directly on top of the road sign. Not only does it create the picture of ice cream sitting on top of a cone, but because of the way the picture is taken it also gives the illusion that the clouds are sat in the foreground or middle ground of the picture even though they are obviously miles and miles away. This is captivating to me but also puzzling because it requires thinking to recognise why the picture looks this way. If the artist were here, I would probably ask them what interested them in the photograph? Was it the illusion that the clouds were sitting on the sign, when in reality they are very far away? Or was it the repeated triangles throughout the picture? I would also be curious to find out if the clouds above the sign were deliberately meant to look like an ice cream, or if the photographer considered this after taking it? I believe the photographer took this picture because of the complexity it actually has to it the more you look. Of course the ice cream (road sign and clouds) is interesting too look at, but there are plenty of photographs with a similar allusion. I think the artist noticed the details in the background, like the repetition of windows or triangular shapes. In my opinion, this picture has a rhythm to it, which is pleasing to look at. The black and white filter also gives this picture an almost satisfying look to it, because everything looks similar and there are no bold colours distracting you from the composition. I think the repeated patterns are effective, because they make you analyse the photo more and cause you to look for any more details you may have missed at first glance.
