“I’ve always been interested in the notion of a utopian space. A space that doesn’t exist but is somehow rooted in reality [...] a space that only exists in a photographic sense”
- Dafna Talmor
Dafna Talmor inspired experimentsI began the experiment by cutting small pieces out of various transparent materials and, with tape, sticking them together to create an acetate transparency.
Then, in the dark room, I enlarged and projected this square onto light sensitive paper before developing the image in the chemicals. |
In the photograph to the left, I like the smooth circular shapes contrasted with the more angular cuts I made on my slide. The shadows displayed in some of the photos also interest me. I think this is because I notice how the atmosphere of the more bright original photograph, once engulfed (even just partially) with these dark shadows, can immediately change. Therefore overall displaying the capability of shadows in photography and how they can be utilised to alter the atmosphere, or feelings you may associate an image with.
If I was to do this again I would probably place some different materials in front of the projection, or perhaps even pain on my landscape slide. I am curious to see how the mood surrounding the photograph, with or without shadows, would change if some more colour was added. |
